About me
I've made things from beads, thread and fabric for as long as I can remember. School holidays were spent at my grandmother's
house where I would spend hours sewing and gluing together whatever I could find in her collection of lace, ribbons, buttons and other
treasures. Later, a degree course in design allowed me to explore the relationships between colours, shapes and textures and I find
that beadwork is a wonderful medium for bringing all these elements together.
My work is often inspired by nature. I love the
challenge of creating a leaf or flower with beads or capturing a mood inspired by an environment such as the seashore. Beads
are combined with threads in many of my designs. I use a wooden braiding stand called a marudai to make beaded kumihimo braids.
I also like to embroider with beads, building up richly textured surfaces. Making beaded beads is another technique that fascinates
me, I enjoy weaving small beads into an object that takes on a sculptural form of it's own.
